A man by the name of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson worked the grounds of Benica United School District. He used the popular weed killer product, Roundup made by Monsanto ( a Bayer company). He developed terminal non-Hodjkin Lymphoma, alleging that using Roundup caused him to develop cancer and that the company knowingly allowed use despite a mountain of evidence showing that a key ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate is a carcinogen, causing cancer.
The jury found Monsanto guilty, failing to warn consumers of this risk associated with Roundup and ordered the company to pay Johnson $289,000,200 in damages.
Johnson’s lawyers had this statement:
“We were willing to show the jury the secret internal Monsanto documents proving that Monsanto has known for decades that glyphosate and specifically Roundup could cause caner. Despite the Environmental Protection Agency’s failing to require labeling, we are proud that an independent jury followed the evidence and used its voice to send a message to Monsanto that its years of deception regarding Roundup is over and that they should put consumer safety first over profits.” – attorneys for Lee Johnson
